Common Ground Helps Girls Grow Up Strong - REGISTER NOW !!!
|
|
Through the generosity of the Women’s Fund at the Community Foundation for Lorain County, Common Ground was able to offer a FREE transformational program for young women in Lorain County this fall. The program, Girls: Growing Up Strong, was offered to local girls ages 15-17 who were referred by their high school guidance counselors. The purpose of the program was to support teen girls in building a stronger sense of identity, a greater acceptance of themselves, and a healthy approach to life. Ably facilitated by local professionals Vikki Howard and Cyndi Orseno, the program was held over two Saturday sessions and included creative, expressive projects and group discussion on topics including body image and self-esteem. Each participant received a book, “Be True to Yourself: A Daily Guide for Teenage Girls” by Amanda Ford, as well as a journal.
Program participants, who came from Amherst, Lorain, Elyria, Avon and Wellington, were unanimously enthusiastic about their experience. Comments from participants included things like, “I learned how to accept myself,” and “It’s going to help me look at things in an all-new perspective.”
Due to the overwhelmingly positive response, the program will run again
April 10th and April 17th 2010 from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm.
There is no charge for participants; meals and snacks are included.
Participants are responsible for their own transporation.
Please call Common Ground at 440-965-5551 for more information and to register for this program. |

Our Camp Philosophy
Earth Camp is a special place. At the heart of our work is a striving to enhance young people's sense of relationship with themselves, each other, and the world. Our belief is that children who attend Earth Camp gain a stronger sense of the diversity of life and possess new tools to assist them in sustaining relationships with their peers, families, and the community-at-large through understanding diversity, peacemaking, human worth, dignity, and respect, and through their own role in the world.
It is Common Ground’s goal to provide a summer camp experience for children of all backgrounds and walks of life. We raise funds each year that provides economically disadvantaged children with the opportunity to attend. Approximately 70% of children attending camp receive financial assistance.
Earth Camp has a strong environmental education component. We believe that by learning about our impact on the natural world, developing an appreciation of it, and gaining an understanding of the interrelatedness of all beings, children will make more responsible decisions and live in the world more safely and gently. Our environmental education program is experiential, hands-on, and interactive, and intertwines throughout other components of the camp experience.
